I think it’s great to be frugal. So often things get thrown out and there’s still plenty of use in them. It’s not good from a money point of view or an environmental one. I tend to use things until they fall apart. I still don’t have a camera in my mobile phone (phones are meant for talking) and I still use Frontpage 2000 for my websites because it does everything I need it to do.
You’d probably love a book I’m reading at the moment called “Your Money Or Your Life” which is about being frugal (which isn’t the same as being a cheapskate) and doing the right thing by the environment. People who love consumerism will probably hate this book but it sets out a good program for spending less money and improving your quality of life.
Oops, I forgot to add something.
Having said all that above, I would be wary of picking up electrical equipment because you don’t know exactly why it was thrown out. There could be a short circuit or anything. I contact my local council for electrical equipment and put big signs all over it warning people if it’s not working properly.
In Surry Hills, I suggest the reason it was thrown out had more to do with fashion than functionality!!!
